The Christian Ethos of Momoyama Gakuin
Momoyama Gakuin University, which is just one part of the educational foundation known collectively as Momoyama Gakuin, has its roots in the Christian evangelizing activity begun in Japan in 1869 by the Church Missionary Society of England. The Rev. C. F. Warren and other missionaries who arrived in Japan in 1873 strongly felt the importance of education for the future of Japan, and in 1884 opened a school for boys in one of the rooms of the Holy Trinity Church, Osaka. Ever since, in spite of the tumultuous events of the past several decades, the Christian ethos that cherishes love and freedom has been sustained by Momoyama Gakuin, and it flourishes today on the campus of Momoyama Gakuin University.
The School Emblem
St. Andrew’s University, the English name of Momoyama Gakuin University, is taken from the name of St. Andrew, one of the Twelve Disciples of Christ. The Latin motto SEQUIMINI ME (Follow me) were the words said to have been spoken by Jesus Christ, a call which Andrew obeyed. St. Andrew, though suffering cruelly as a result of the oppression that early Christianity was subjected to, continued to preach love and freedom. The St. Andrew’s cross featured on the University crest is the expression of our educational philosophy upholding St. Andrew’s spirit of love for humanity.
The Origin of "Momoyama"
Our name "Momoyama" comes from the location of the school during the late 19th to early 20th century. In 1891, the Koto Eigakko or Higher English School established in the previous year moved to a new building in Tennoji-mura Nakayama (present-day Fudegasaki-cho in Tennoji Ward, Osaka City, where the Osaka Red Cross Hospital was formerly located). This area was known as "Momoyama" because of the peach ("momo") orchards that surrounded it, and in 1895 the Higher English School was renamed as "Momoyama Gakuin".
