The English-language book PRAYER OF THE NOH PLAY SUMIDA-GAWA: A Philosophy for Living Through the Unjust Present, Volume 1, authored by Associate Professor Takami Sugimoto (Faculty of Humanistic Education) and Professor Caterina Caoru Saito (Faculty of Sociology), was published by LITTLES in the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, and Japan, on July 20.
Associate Professor Sugimoto specializes in English literature, education, and international social systems; her research focuses on the "language" and "mind" nurtured in multilingual environments.
Professor Saito specializes in philosophy; her research focuses on the concept of "conscience" in European and Japanese thought and culture.
This book is a new English edition of Professor Saito's original Japanese work, edited, annotated, and translated by Associate Professor Sugimoto.
It identifies the "polyphony of praying winds" as the power of the Noh play Sumida-gawa and explores the possibilities of Noh through an examination of a structure of prayer that can respond compassionately to despair.
Sugimoto and Saito believe that culture has the power to connect people across borders and generations.
